Last summer I posted screenshots of Mac OS X running on Windows XP and followed up with a guide on how to get the developer version of Mac OS X installed natively. A few days ago a friend pointed out that the hacking guru, Maxxuss, did it again and managed to create a patch to break Apple’s security measures on OS X 10.4.4; which reportedly were stronger than all the previous releases combined.
The patch, although reportedly preliminary, provides hope for all those trying to boot Windows XP on Macbook Pro (Intel Based Macintosh) for a $10,000 prize. Why? Just because it’s possible! It would be great to be able to run Mac on Intel machines without paying premium for an acctual Macintosh and be able to dual boot.
I should mention that applying this patch to a torrented or non-torrented version of Mac OS X is illegal. You also shouldn’t expect stability. OS X wasn’t designed to run on commodity PCs, if you’re considering building an Apple like PC I would recommend that you google Apple iMac’s specifications and build a replica. OS X doesn’t support as much hardware as Windows or Linux does.
I personally thing that Apple should consider selling their OS to PC users. OS X has a potential of becoming as popular as Windows. And from a developers point of view that would make creating software for Macintosh more commercially viable (compare the number of applications available to windows and linux with the number of applications for macs).
I doubt that would happen anytime soon though. Apple is a hardware company; they make OS X and iLife to sell Macintoshs. They sell iTunes to sell iPods, this is where most of the company’s revenue lays.Starting up a hardware testing lab similar to that of Microsoft will tax their revenues and support teams, and the OS could probably lose it’s reputation.
Until then, Oh Maxxuss… How do we love thee? Let me count the ways!
Enjoy the patch
