iPhone Interface for Windows Mobile based Pocket PC Phones

Love your Pocket PC? Not willing to wait 6 months? Can’t afford to shell out $600 or probably a $1000 for the non-subsidized version? Well you can install the iPhone skin for Windows Mobile. No mutlitouch, ipod or coolness included. However, you’ll get two extra soft buttons that won’t ship with the final iPhone :)
And since we’re talking about the two, here’s a little side by side comparison.

SopCast: P2P Television

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

Want to watch the finals in the comfort of your home but still angry at ART’s monopoly on sports?

Then SopCast is for you.

SopCast, based on P2P technology, allows you to watch streaming television or other media on your PC via the Internet. It has 3 modes, official channels which are supported by sopcast.org, user channels, and test channels.

The software is available for free download on the SopCast site.
Don’t forget that you’ll need a lot of bandwidth ;)
[It works best with a 1Mbps connection, but a 512 Kb would do; if you don't mind the picture freezing every 10 minutes or so]

Mactel Windows XP Solution Up For Grabs

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

I have some good news and some bad news; if you’re trying to get Windows XP to run on one of those sweet Mactelsl; you can no longer win the $13,000 grand prize. The good news is, you don’t need to waste anytime trying to come up with a solution to circumvent EFI and get WinXP/Vista to boot. The solution is up for grabs. I still haven’t tested it but it should work.

So if you want your mac to look like this

Mactel does Windows XP

Wednesday, March 15th, 2006

Last January a bunch of bloggers got together and pledged their hard earned cash to whoever is able to boot Windows XP on an Intel based Macintosh (mactel), when I wrote that post $5678 today the amount has doubled to $12,000; and it’s possible narf2006 is the winner.

Following is a video of Windows XP booted on a dual-partitioned Intel iMac; the video seems legit; however as anything on the internet has been met with skepticism. The procedure still haven’t been submitted or reviewed yet so no one can actually tell. I’m putting off my next laptop purchase till it’s confirmed.

Carry on to watch the quicktime video and tell us what you think.

A new patch allows 10.4.5 to run on Whiteboxes

Friday, February 24th, 2006

With a bootable OSx86 10.4.4 DVD in my hand, and the news of being able to install 10.4.5 patch immediately after install; I think I’ll be busy playing with Mac OS X all night.

Incase you don’t know what I’m talking about; a DVD ISO that would allow you to install 10.4.4 on a regular white box is being circulated on bittorrent. And while I was skeptic at first, reports are confirming being able to boot it up and enjoy OS X on their intel boxes.

The installation process isn’t as pleasant as it is supposed to be however; Cavemonkey50 reports:

My installation succeeded, although I did have a few minor kext errors. With some quick minor repairs this installation will be up and running in no time

That’s not the ened of our good news Friday. Maxxuss released a new patch that would allow you to upgrade to 10.4.5 on your hacked OSx86 box. Sweet, now you can run a hacked up to date machine ;)
Stay tuned in via our Mac feed for more news on OSx86 and everything mac

Blogger Hacks: Categories for Blogger

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

One of the biggest turn offs of using Blogger is the lack of categories. It’s one of the main reasons why I switched to Wordpress a week ago. Today, a week too late I must say, I discovered a few hacks to add categories to blogger. None of them is straight forward, but they provide the feature blogger needs desperately

  • Use the tag-making bookmarklet written by Ted Ernst.
  • Use pace_tua’s upgraded bookmarklet, which generates the same code, but pastes it automatically into the blogger “create post” link field and therefore includes it in your post without cutting & pasting. You’ll need to change your blog settings to show the link field.
  • If you browse with Firefox. Install the greasemonkey extension, and then run a greasemonkey script that will modify the blogger create / edit post page to include a tag creator in the form. Then just type your tags as you type your post!! This method can be bookmarklet-free, because the script adds a bookmark to del.icio.us link to the blogger publish notification window.

I recommend the greasemonkey extension option as it’s the easiest, however feel free to experiment with the rest and let us know of the results.

Interesting article on OSx86 10.4.4 Installation

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Cavemonkey50.com has an interesting post on his OSx86 10.4.4 installation experience.

Apple has greatly improved the performance of OSx86 for the final released build. Applications load faster, effects work without delay, widgets appear faster, and best of all, Rosetta is fast. It’s everything I dreamed it to be.

I wonder if it has nVidia drivers built in one of the biggest turn offs of the developers version is the poor support for hardware. I guess I will have to try that out over the weekend.

Hack: Get a free domain name from Godaddy.com

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

I just love poor website implementations and free stuff even more. Buy.com is offering a free domain name from Godaddy with any purchase. Now the fun part is that you don’t even have to order anything and you’d still get the free domain coupon!

Get a free domain name from Godaddy.com using a buy.com coupon

I’m not sure if they caught up to it yet or whether they will actually honor any of these domains considering no purchase was made. Commenters on Digg claim they received theirs. You can also check the forum thread on Slickdeals. No harm in trying though ;) Try it while it lasts

Apple’s Mac OS X 1.4.4 Hacked

Friday, February 17th, 2006

Last summer I posted screenshots of Mac OS X running on Windows XP and followed up with a guide on how to get the developer version of Mac OS X installed natively. A few days ago a friend pointed out that the hacking guru, Maxxuss, did it again and managed to create a patch to break Apple’s security measures on OS X 10.4.4; which reportedly were stronger than all the previous releases combined.

The patch, although reportedly preliminary, provides hope for all those trying to boot Windows XP on Macbook Pro (Intel Based Macintosh) for a $10,000 prize. Why? Just because it’s possible! It would be great to be able to run Mac on Intel machines without paying premium for an acctual Macintosh and be able to dual boot.
I should mention that applying this patch to a torrented or non-torrented version of Mac OS X is illegal. You also shouldn’t expect stability. OS X wasn’t designed to run on commodity PCs, if you’re considering building an Apple like PC I would recommend that you google Apple iMac’s specifications and build a replica. OS X doesn’t support as much hardware as Windows or Linux does.

I personally thing that Apple should consider selling their OS to PC users. OS X has a potential of becoming as popular as Windows. And from a developers point of view that would make creating software for Macintosh more commercially viable (compare the number of applications available to windows and linux with the number of applications for macs).

I doubt that would happen anytime soon though. Apple is a hardware company; they make OS X and iLife to sell Macintoshs. They sell iTunes to sell iPods, this is where most of the company’s revenue lays.Starting up a hardware testing lab similar to that of Microsoft will tax their revenues and support teams, and the OS could probably lose it’s reputation.

Until then, Oh Maxxuss… How do we love thee? Let me count the ways!

Enjoy the patch

$5678 Bucks for running Windows XP on MacTel

Wednesday, January 25th, 2006

As of this posting $5678 USD have been pledged by several bloggers if you can get Windows XP to boot on a MacTel.

Some people might wonder why anyone would want to dual boot Mac OS X with Windows, and the answer is quite simple.

Just because you can.

Or perhaps just because you need to. For instance Keynote is miles ahead of Microsoft PowerPoint. On the other hand many enterprise software available for Windwos isn’t available for Mac. Having the two on the same machine can save you time and money.
