… can you maintain your day job, excel in it, be an entrepreneur at night; and maintain a social life? (I’m not even going to add post a word or two).

ikbis is now more browsable; thanks to a newly added and much needed navigation panel!
Ikbis.com's newly added navigation

They’ve also added EXIF information to photos; ah the shame of owning an Eastman Kodak DX4900! Hey it was a hot item back in 2002!
EXIF data

On the downside; iKbis Picks still do not have an RSS feed, nor do comments (you still have to logon to see new comments on your photos). The “recent comments” page does not display what it claims (unless the comments are still new). All comments are sorted oldest to newest instead of the other way around. The “Comments I’ve made” page includes those resulting from a flickr import (arrrrrrrrrgh!).

Adding contacts is one hell of a bugger as well. You still cannot search for contacts via email (you type Mohammad I type Muhammed, email makes it much easier). And incase you do find Muhammed, you still have to assign him to a “contact category”, bad idea, very bad idea!

Don’t get me started on search, clicking a tag in a search result should return all photos with that specific tag, not just the user’s (on who’s tag I clicked).

Downsides aside, good job! Looking forward to seeing those resolved :)

Hold your Wee for a Wii

Sunday, January 14th, 2007

…. And die.

A woman who competed in a radio station’s contest to see how much water she could drink without going to the bathroom died of water intoxication, the coroner’s office said Saturday.

Jennifer Strange, 28, was found dead Friday in her suburban Rancho Cordova home hours after taking part in the “Hold Your Wee for a Wii” contest in which KDND 107.9 promised a Nintendo Wii video game system for the winner. “She said to one of our supervisors that she was on her way home and her head was hurting her real bad,” said Laura Rios, one of Strange’s co-workers at Radiological Associates of Sacramento. “She was crying, and that was the last that anyone had heard from her.”

It was not immediately known how much water Strange consumed.

The question is… Who’s dumber? The nutcases who come up with such competitions or those who take part in them?

iPhone Interface for Windows Mobile based Pocket PC Phones

Love your Pocket PC? Not willing to wait 6 months? Can’t afford to shell out $600 or probably a $1000 for the non-subsidized version? Well you can install the iPhone skin for Windows Mobile. No mutlitouch, ipod or coolness included. However, you’ll get two extra soft buttons that won’t ship with the final iPhone :)
And since we’re talking about the two, here’s a little side by side comparison.

Apple’s iPhone Finally a Reality (Revisited)

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

After years of waiting Apple’s iPhone is finally out. Following is a summary of the iPhone (not to be confused with Linksys) features:

  • Quadband GSM + EDGE
  • Wifi Capability
  • Thin form factor (11.6 mm)
  • 3.5″ Touch screen with Multitouch capability, and a proximity sensor that disables the touch functionality when the phone is near your face.
  • Runs a version of Mac OS X
  • Features a full version of Safari browser (with Java capability) as well as iMail (with HTML editing ability)
  • 2 Megapixel Camera
  • Orientation sensor (tilts the screen depending on how you’re holding your phone)
  • Visual on screen keyboard.

The iPhone also doubles as an iPod with a bigger screen and is capable of playing music, tv shows and movies. And just like any other Apple product; the interface is very intuitive. Here’s what we like

  • Finger navigation and auto rotation of photos
  • iChat like SMS Messaging
  • Visual Contact List
  • The ability to use Desktop Widgets!
  • Internet software is capable of deciding whether to connect via EDGE or WiFi

What Impressed Us Most:
Google Earth running on the iPhone

What we didn’t like

  • Battery life (5 hours)
  • Available exclusively through Cingular
  • No word on whether it would be able to sync with Windows/Office or not.
  • Lack of built in GPS

Pricing:

  • 8GB model - $599
  • 4GB model - $499

Clearly iPhone sets the bar for everyone else. The fact that you can run Google Earth on your mobile now can open up a whole new world of possibilities, and unless HTC comes up with something better, my next phone will most probably be an iPhone. It’s a shame that it won’t be available right after the keynote (Submitted now to FCC Takes two months to clear, ships in June).

Apple.com online store is now offline. Exciting!

Apple Store Now Offline

With less than 10 minutes seperating us from Steve Job’s keynote, everybody is speculating what could be in store. My guess are; the cell phone that won’t be called iPhone, an iPod with better video playback capabilities, and possibly a Mac Tablet. We’ll find out in a few :)

Why Wii is going to win the console war (or Wii So Horny)

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Note: This video is probably not work safe (unless you own the damn joint).

This is a a great 3 minutes illustration on why the Wii is succeeding in the market beyond all expectations. Ask yourself if this movie would make any sense whatsoever if the couple were having sexy fun with a Playstation 3 controller or (good god, no), an XBOX 360 gamepad. Of course it’s not the first time someone comes up with way to have some fun with a console. We all remember Jane Pincarkd’s idea of fun with a PS2 controller; of course back then PS2 was sleek, stylish, and culturally engaging. I never thought I’d see the day when Nintendo held that throne, but now they do.

Nintendo succeeds because they are focued on solving the core user need, helping average people have a lot of fun rather than becoming hopelessly mired in a feature / functionality battle with historic competitors.

Suzan Wu: The Nintendo Wii - Hail to the king, baby!

So shortly after getting the trial version of opera on the Wii I went to a free adult site http://www.tiava.com to look at some photos. Yesterday I went back and… well apparently either the site maintainers are Wii enthusiasts or I’m not the only one. The site has added a “Wii friendly” interface for browsing their content. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised the adult industry seems to always know where technology is going, but I’m surprised to see it so quick. The browser hasn’t been available but for a week now

Arstech Reader: The world of adult sites is becoming Nintendo-friendly

It’s not so surprising, the adult industry are usually the first to adopt any new technology. I wouldn’t be surprised if a new form of adult gaming is designed around Wii. Of course there are other ways to stream the x rated (and the decent) content to your Wii.  Enter Media Center X

Wii Media Center X is a free multimedia server developed by Red Kawa. It allows you to stream certain types of pictures, music, videos and files from your computer (where the server running) to your Nintendo Wii. It runs on most major operating systems including Windows, Mac OS X and Linux.

More and more reasons to go ahead and buy a Wii. The full version of the video above can be downloaded from here (note: Rachel Gold the star of this video has an IMDB listing, this could very well be some form professional viral marketing).
